What's on my design wall?

What's on my design wall?  So if you are wondering why I have been having videos on my blog...well...it started out as a school project for one of the boys and then they really enjoyed editing and such so the videos have continued.

Please watch this little video...
This is a pic of my design wall before I put up the 3D Bow Ties.  The blocks below are called Grandmother's Choice.  I have all 216 of these blocks so now I just need to assemble the top.
This is a photo of the Yo-Yo class that I taught a week or so ago.  I mentioned that the place double booked so I had to teach the class in the entry/hallway.  It was so crowded but they didn't seem to mind.  I have another class this evening but it may end up being cancelled because we are under a winter weather advisory.
Anyway...back to the 3D Bow Ties...they are fun and fast little blocks.
I actually have a few more blocks on the wall since this photo.  Have you ever just played around with a block and then one turns into several and before you know it you are working on a quilt?  LOL!  That's how this happened.  I have several more blocks cut out and ready to piece.
So it's 6:15am...Richard left for work about 30 minutes ago and now I need to get the boys up...one for school and the other for work.

Yo-Yo Quilt Class & Award

Shew....what an evening!  LOL!  I've attached a little video about my evening at the Yo-Yo Quilt Class.  It started out very stressful but ended on a good note.

One thing that stressed me out so much was the fact that the place that we were having the class double booked events!  So I ended up having to teach my class in the entry/hallway area!  :(  I was not happy but it all worked out in the end, I guess...

I was also presented with an award!  I was NOT expecting it at all and as you can see in the photo, I was getting a little emotional as they were talking about me.
For some reason it would not let me link to the article so I just copied and pasted it.  It reads...

Thinking of a member in the community that has made a huge difference, sharing their skills and talents, enabling others to be included in the joys of her passion. This wonderful community asset wasn’t hard to decide on. Kristie Layne has shared her passion with many community members. She is a wonderful teacher and mentor when it comes to showing the art of quilting. Kristie’s passion for quilting has been made very visible in her success of making hundreds of quilts. She has worked alongside us teaching others for quite some time. Kristie has always been a text or call away when it comes to being there for her community to learn this skill. Kristie’s passions do not end there. She is also a wonderful wife and mother, daughter and sister. Kristie is very caring of her family and her community. She enjoys doing meal preparations and other various tasks. Kristie’s enthusiasm in what she does has sparked the interest of many others within the community. There have been many success stories stating “I never imagined I could do this, but with Kristie’s help I’ve accomplished so much”, “Kristie has enabled me to take my free time and turn it into a feeling of accomplishment”. The wonderful passion she loves has turned into a community of inclusions and sharing.

Another class and a new upcoming class

I had another hexie class or Grandmother's Flower Garden class a few weeks ago.  This class was held in the meeting room at one of the local fire departments.  It was small but we made it work anyway.  We had a full house!
Everyone seemed to really enjoy themselves...
I met a few new people, some ladies that I went to high school with, some that I just knew in the community and some that knew my mom.  :)  I love living in a small town, everyone seems to know everyone.
My display quilt.  This quilt is completely hand pieced and hand quilted.  I found it at a yard sale for $10.  I was sooo happy when I found it but sad for the unknown maker.
 More of my samples....
 More samples...
I have another quilt class coming up January 30th.  It will be a Yo-Yo class.  This will be the first Yo-Yo class that I have taught.  I am so excited about this.  My Yo-Yo quilt is very special to me and I will tell you the story behind it in a later post.

I am also hoping to be able to video bits and pieces of some future classes.

Hexagon Class

I haven't been doing a very good job of blogging lately.  Things have just been crazy around here and I haven't been feeling the best in the world either....low potassium and high BP which is due from stress.  I just need to deal with stress a little better I guess.  LOL!

Anyway, I had another hexagon class the other day!!!  I wasn't feeling the best in the world but I tried not to let that show.  Hunter went with me to help me carry my stuff and help me get things set up.  He was such a big help.

The class went very well.  I just can't tell you how much that I enjoy these classes.  Here I am doing a little one-on-one demonstration.
 Everyone caught on really well.
 I don't think I got a photo of everyone.  :(
If you look real close you will see we had a tiny little one in class.  He was only 4 weeks old and such a good baby.  He had a head full of hair too.  He slept all most the whole time and only woke up to nurse.  :)   It was a great class and as you can see in this photo even the other ladies were very helpful.  I think in this photo they were discussing "knots"
One thing that I have discovered in these classes is that everyone ties knots differently.  I've had some that have never tied a knot in thread, some are lefties, some do a normal knot and I do a quilter's knot.  Some wanted to learn the quilter's knot, so we worked on that as well.

After the class I came home and went straight to bed.  LOL!

It was lot's of fun and everyone seemed to enjoy it.  I have another class that will be scheduled real soon.

Please stay with me, I have a lot more to blog about and get things caught up.  :)

Hexagon Newspaper Article...

I am one happy woman!  My Facebook was blowing up with messages from people asking if there was going to be another class.  I was also tagged in several photos showing the hexie flowers that they had finished up!  That was amazing!  They all did a wonderful job!

Here is a link from the local newspaper about our class!!!!  Wonderful!!!!

Class was taught by the talented Kristie Layne

Layne demonstrated just a few of the endless creation possibilities that can come from the hexagon shape. Layne demonstrated just a few of the endless creation possibilities that can come from the hexagon shape. Scraps of fabric, strands of thread and ladies eager to learn filled Blaine Community Center Tuesday evening as the Kentucky Community of Sharing hosted a Quilting Class, the first of its’ kind in this area.
The class was taught by the talented Kristie Layne. A Lawrence County resident who has been quilting for over twenty years.
“I’ve made over 250 quilts,” said Layne. “I’ve sold a few, gave several as gifts and have over 100 that I’ve kept.”
At no charge to participants, each received a starter kit that provided them with the pieces and tools needed to make a quilt piece following the pattern Grandmother’s Flower Garden. Layne taught using a method called English Paper Piecing, an age old technique that dates back to the late 1700’s and became popular in the United States during the Depression era. Paper piecing is the process of taking a piece of fabric and basting to a thin cardstock or paper to add stability making it easier to work with and keep points precise.
Following Layne’s example, the class was able to cut, stitch and piece a full hexagon quilt piece.

Participants observed as Layne demonstrated how to construct the quilt piece. Participants observed as Layne demonstrated how to construct the quilt piece. “The possibilities with the hexagon shape are endless!” said Layne, who had multiple examples on hand to demonstrate.
While most participants had never had any quilting experience, many found it to be very rewarding.
“I feel accomplished,” said Marcella Staniford of Martha. “Just learning to complete this one piece is very rewarding.”
Throughout the class Layne reminded students to not “over think” or “rush” the process.
“It’s not a project that is finished quickly, so don’t get discouraged,” said Layne. “Just relax and enjoy the process.”

Grandmother's Flower Garden Class....

Hexie class review....I had a blast!  I hope everyone else did too.  Hunter was with me and he took the photos.
I am most comfortable when talking about quilting.  I love it that much.  It is my comfort zone.
 We had a great turnout.
The youngest taking the class was 10!  You never know, she may be a quilter some day.  I love seeing younger people doing this.  Also had girls from Hunter's class along with their mothers.
This is my neighbor...well she lives about 3 miles away.
Everyone was working hard on their hexies...
I think that everyone left knowing how to do this...
Newly retired....maybe she will enjoy quilting.  :)
 Sewing right along...
More sewing...the lady on the end is a Bonnie Hunter fan!  :)
Last but not least...my sister Chantal!!!!  This is the first time that I have ever known of my sister sewing!!!  I wanted to cry when she told me that she was going.  LOL!  I've tried for years to get her to try quilting but she never had any interest in it really.  She and Addison came to class.  Who knows someday Addison may be a quilter.  :)
Posing with Chantal and Addison!  Addison was soooo good.
Hunter snapped this photo of me near the end of the class...
I absolutely love teaching these little classes!  I also love meeting new people ans sharing the craft of quilting.

When I got home Richard was in bed because he had to get up early for work.  What really made my night was that both of my boys told me they were proud of me.  That means so much to me.

Cutting, canning and teaching...

I started cutting some diamonds from the strip sets for my Trail Mix quilt.  Honestly this is all that I got cut.  LOL!  This is just from one strip set so they will be all mixed up once I get them all cut.  Lots of scrappy goodness.  I think I need something like 176 of these diamonds.
After cutting the diamonds you have these little triangle pieces leftover.  The directions say to sew a strip in the center to connect the two triangles, press and cut out a diamond shape from it.  No waste!
My hexie class is this evening!!!  Very excited about it.  I'll post photos in the next post.  I know most of the people in the class so that makes it really nice.  Actually two of them are young girls that are in Hunter's class.  Their mothers are taking the class as well.  I love that!

I also did some canning yesterday.  I bought chicken breast on sale for .99 per pound.  I cooked it, pulled it off the bone, shredded it and canned it.  I ended up with 9 pints of chicken breast and I crammed all that I could get in those jars and also 4 more quarts of chicken broth/stock.  Let me tell you....I WILL NOT do anymore canning while the water is off!!!  Shew....I have jugs of water all over my kitchen but it is just too much of an aggravation trying to do it that way and not just run to the sink and turn the water on.
This is some dehydrating that I have been doing over the past few days.  The dehydrating is much easier to do since the only water it requires is to wash the veggies off.  Anyway, the tiny jar is my tomato powder.  The other jars are quarts, the first one is 5 pounds of carrots!  I was shocked at how much they dehydrated.  The next jar is 2 bags of celery, mushrooms and tomato slices.  I also put more jalapenos in the freezer.
 That's all for now......

Busy, busy, busy...

Yesterday was a much better day than Wednesday!  Thank God!  :)  I had a rather busy day actually.  I worked on my dishes and laundry that piled up from the day of not having water.

I also made some hairbows!  Some of these are for Addison and some are going to be for sale.  I have several more to make.
A couple of days ago I dehydrated some tomatoes and I forgot to post about them.  I honestly just needed a break from canning but I didn't want the tomatoes to go to waste so I dehydrated them.
Then I ground them up to tomato powder!  So many uses for this...soup base, tomato paste, tomato sauce, stews, chili, etc.
I also dehydrated some parsley too.  I have more that needs to be dehydrated and ground up.
Right now I have potato slices in the dehydrator.  I'll post photos when those are done.

Now my wonderful news!!!!  The Community of Sharing Program scheduled my hexie class for September 8th and it is already FULL!  :)  YAY!!!!  I feel so Blessed!  Then......I got a message from the saying that I was approved for another class to be taught near the senior apartments so that they could attend.  No date yet but should have the date in a few days.  Also with the possibility of another class in Fallsburg, which is another little town in our county.  I'm so very excited about this.  I don't think I have ever had so much fun.  So I need to assemble more kits!  I have to make a trip to Ashland next week so I will stop by Hobby Lobby and pick of more of the blue and red fabrics that I am using in the kits.
I'll be sure to post photos from the class on Tuesday.   The private class was cancelled but that's okay, no problems.

Private Hexagon Class...

It was a busy day yesterday.  I accomplished lots of cleaning in the house and also got some sewing done.  I may be a little slow going on this project but I have a million other things going on too.  I'm not in any hurry, just want to enjoy the process.  I now have 12 of the 20 strip sets needed and I also added another postage stamp block.
Now on to the other things that had me so busy yesterday.  Hunter has a friend over for the entire weekend so I cleaned the house up nice.

I mentioned that I had been asked to teach another hexie class sometime in September, I should have a date on that sometime Monday.  I started cutting out some kits for that.

Now I have 2 more classes lined up!!!  The exciting part is...a childhood friend of my sister's asked me if I would possibly do a small class at her house during the day as my other class will more than likely be scheduled in the evening.  She has small school age children and it is hard for her and a few others to make it to the evening class as their evenings are crazy.  She asked how many that I would have to have scheduled for me to do a class at her house.  I told her and we now have it scheduled for Wednesday at 11am!!!!!  She is probably around 6-7 miles away from me so it's not too far.  :)  I'm excited and I will be cutting more kits for that today!!!!  I certainly never expected that someone would want me to do a private class in their home for a few people.  This should be lots of fun!!!  I will have to make sure that I take photos too.

I guess that is all for now.  I'm actually typing this the night before and scheduling it to post at 5am.  It's almost 1:30am right now and I need to get in bed because I will be getting Richard up at 4:20am for work.  My plans for the day...after I sleep in after he leaves...is to get all of my 20 strip sets finished.  Will that happen?  I don't know but I sure hope so!

Hexagon Class!!!

I am so excited!!!  I am working with the Kentucky Community of Sharing program and doing a quilting class on the Grandmother's Flower Garden and other quilts using the hexagon shape.
As of right now we are FULLY BOOKED!!!  They will be adding other names to the waiting list for hopefully another class in the future!  Kristie, (not me) one of the coordinators told me that they have never had a class fill up so fast for anything.  That makes me happy and a little nervous as well.

I've spent the past day or so assembling kits and printing off information sheets.  I have lots of samples of different designs with the hexagons and other English Paper Piecing patterns as well as a finished Grandmother's Flower Garden quilt.

This is a photo of the colorway used in the kits.
I will be teaching both the traditional basting method of using thread as well as the modern technique of using a glue stick.  They will be able to try both and decide which way is best for them.

Again, I am very excited and can not wait!  I'll admit yesterday I was nervous but today I am just excited!

I'll have photos to post after the class.  :)
